Postcards
A majority of nude postcards were called postcards because of the size.
They were never meant to be postally sent. It was illegal.
The nudes were marketed in a monthly magazine called
the "La Beaute". They targeted artists looking for poses. Each issue
contained 75 nude images which could be ordered by mail, in the form of
postcards, hand-tinted or sepia toned. While the photo reproduced in
the magazine was lightly retouched, the postcards sent to the home
address were complete. Of course, not only artists took advantage of
this means of obtaining nude images. There were street dealers, tobacco
shops, and a variety of other means of marketing to tourists.
County fairs and carnivals is where teenagers were able to get risque
photos. Barkers would trade a nudie photo for the stuffed animal a
lad won.
Cartes d'visite
Tobacco/Cigarette Cards
Cards used to stiffen the pack. Large variety of cards developed.
First baseball cards. Risque subjects quite popular.
Individual ladies collected just as baseball cards. Many were
actresses of the day. Popularized early soft porn. Cartes d'visite
size.
This Collection
All these are original and vintage. All are real
photographs except for the last four which are photo lithographs the
sort that immediately preceded the dot screened photo reproduction
process.
