Saul Bellow
1915-2005
Writer
Winner of the Nobel Prize for
literature in 1967, Bellow is perhaps best known
for his novel Herzog (1964). His first novel was
Dangling Man (1944).
Other works include The Victim
(1947), The Adventures of Augie March, which won the
National Book Award for fiction in 1954, Seize The Day (1956), Henderson
The Rain King (1959),
Mosby's Memoirs and Other Stories
(1968),
and Mr. Sammler's Planet (1970).
His work of fiction,
Humboldt's Gift (1975), was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

Winston Churchill

Prime Minister of England
Churchill was the
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945
and again from 1951 to 1955. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature
in 1953.
He is buried in Westminster Abbey in London.
Charlie Chaplin
1889 - 1977
Actor
Chaplin was a British
comedy star before becoming the most famous actor
in the silent film era of Hollywood as The Tramp. His 1931 performance in City Lights
is considered his best performance.
This photograph was originally taken in 1932 at Chartwell
in England and was included
in the documentary film on the life of Churchill entitled The Finest Hours
in 1964.
This print was used as a studio publicity photo. Photo is 8 x 10; image 6
x 9 inches.

President of the United States
Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th
President (Republican) of the
United States serving two terms (1955-1961). A general in World
War II, Eisenhower
served as the U.S. Army Chief of Staff before becoming the President
of Columbia University, then running for U.S. President.
This photograph is from 1953 while
he was serving as President.

official
U.S. Army/Pentagon photograph.

T. S. Elliot
Writer / Poet
1888 - 1965
One of the most distinguished
literary figures of the 20th century, T. S. Eliot won
the
Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. Among his best-known
writings are
The Lovesong of J. Alfred Purfrock, The Wasteland
and Four Quartets.
He studied at Harvard, The Sorbonne,
and Oxford, and eventually won
thirteen honorary doctorates
and two (posthumous) Tony Awards.
This photo was released to announce the publication of
Collected Poems: 1909-1962 in 1963 on his 70th birthday.

Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi
Nonviolent Revolutionary
1869
- 1948
Today known
as The Father of India, Gandhi was the pioneer of Satyagraha
-a
philosophy that is largely concerned with truth and 'resistance to evil
through non-violent acts' -
and with it led India to independence from England and inspired movements for civil rights and
freedom across
the world. On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was shot and killed while having
his nightly public walk on the grounds of Birla
House in New Delhi.
Perhaps Gandhi's most
memorable sayings include:
"An eye for an eye makes
the whole world blind."
"There are
many causes that I am prepared to die for but no causes that I am
prepared to kill for."
"We must
be the change we want to see in the world."
This is a news release photo from the mid to
late 1930s. It bears the scars of use including several
short edge tears and paper tape repairs on the back.
The back also has markings and labels from
various photo agencies
including Culver Pictures in
New York and Counsis Brothers in Bombay.
Firm dates are being researched. This 4 5/8 x 6 3/8 photograph is an original print.

Queen Elizabeth II

Queen of "England"
Since
her coronation in 1943, Elizabeth has reigned as the Queen of 16
independent
nations known as the Commonwealth Realms. She is the
second-longest -serving
head of state in the world.
This 8 x 10 photograph is undated but
probably comes from the 1950s.
The back displays the stamp of the United Press
Association of New York City.
It is an original print.

President of the United States
LBJ, a Democrat, was the 36th President of
the United States,
assuming the presidency after the assassination of John F. Kennedy
in 1963 and serving until 1969.
This photograph is the famous presidential
portrait by photographer Arnold Newman
(signed in the negative).
It is an original, 8 x 10 print taken in the Oval Office
of the White
House in1963.

Carl Sandburg

Writer / Poet
One of America's most
famous poets and writers, Sandburg won a Pulitzer Prize in
History
in 1940 for his Abraham Lincoln: The War Years, and a second
Pulitzer
for
his collection The Complete Poems of Carl
Sandburg.
His home of 22 years in North Carolina is now a National Historic Site.
This famous image of Sandburg is the one
many remember him by.
It was issued for the release of "Remembrance Rock,"
his only novel,
published in 1948. The photo is 5 x 7: image 4 1/8 x 5
inches. It is an original print..

Adlai Stevenson
1900 - 1965
Politician / Statesman
An American politician and statesman. Adlai
Ewing Stevenson was noted for his skill in debate
and oratory. In 1948 he became Governor of Illinois, but lost bids
for the U. S. presidency
in both 1952 and 1956, and under President John F. Kennedy
served as the Ambassador to the United Nations.
This photograph of Stevenson is the one by
which most Americans know him.
It is an 8 x 10 original print from the mid 1950s

Haile Selassi
1892 - 1975
Emperor of Ethiopia
Selassi was de jure
emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974; de facto emperor from
1916 to 1936 and again from 1941 to 1974, and spent the years 1936 to
1941
in exile in England. Among many members of the Rastafarian
(back-to-Africa) Movement,
Selassi was considered the Black Messiah who would lead the
peoples of Africa and the
African Diaspora to freedom. The
circumstances of his death in 1975 are still debated.
This photograph is a rare and important
image of the Emperor; he is
pictured in
full military regalia. It is an 8 x10 inch original print from the late 1950s.

Jonas Salk
1914 - 1995
Medical Doctor
Discoverer of Polio Vaccine
An American physician and researcher, best
known as the inventor of polio vaccine.
Within two years, polio cases dropped 85-90%. Later he directed
the Jonas Salk Institute
and devoted much of his energy to the development of an AIDS
vaccine.
In 1970 Salk married Françoise Gilot, former mistress of Pablo Picasso
(1944-53) and mother
of Claude and Poloma Picasso. Salk died in 1995 and Gilot
continues to survive him.
This is an 8 x 10 original photograph taken in 1961 with a World Wide Photos
credit stamp on the back. Orange grease pencil editor's crop marks
appear on the front.

Jawaharlal Nehru
1889 - 1964
Prime Minister of India
Also known as Pandit or Teacher, Nehru was a
leader in the Indian Independence
Movement and head of the Indian National Congress working with Mahatma
Gandhi
to win independence for India from British rule. Upon independence
in 1947,
Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India, and
subsequently won
elections in 1952, 1957 and 1962. He died in office in 1964, and
his daughter,
Indira Gandhi, became Prime Minister.
This small original photograph
measures 4 x 6 inches, and the image is
3 1/2 x 4 inches. It has no identifying marks, but was taken during his
tenure, probably c. 1955 -1960.

Leaders
Martin Luther King was an American clergyman who spearheaded the
mid-20th
century civil rights movement in the USA. He championed
Gandhi's
non-violent, passive resistance ideology but he himself was
shot in 1968.
In 1964 he became the 17th American
and youngest recipient,
at age 35, of the Nobel Peace Prize
His wife Coretta Scott King
carried on his work until her death in 2006.
This is a vintage 8 x 10 inch news photograph
taken of King and his wife Coretta
at the news conference in Atlanta, Georgia announcing his receiving the Nobel Peace Prize,
October 14, 1964.
There are no markings on the photo, and it is in
excellent repair.

Edward R. Murrow
1908 - 1956
Newscaster
An American journalist and newscaster,
Murrow first achieved prominence with a
series of radio news broadcasts during World War II. In the
fifties he produced a series
of TV news reports that helped lead to the censure of Senator Joseph
McCarthy.
The 2005 film Good Night and Good Luck, depicting the
McCarthy-era
communist hunt in Hollywood, rekindled memories of Murrow.
He is considered to be among the greatest figures in journalism.
This is a vintage 7 x 9 inch photo, and
quite rare. There are no markings (other than
editor's crop marks in grease pencil) on the photo, and it is in
excellent repair.
It is from the late 1940 to early 1950 era.
