Three top scientists who helped perfect the successful American satellite Explorer
hold aloft a duplicate of it at a news conference at IGY headquarters here tonight
after confirmation that the satellite was in such firm orbit that it might keep going
for 10 years.  They are, from left, Dr.William H. Pickering, California Institute of Technology;
Dr. James Van Allen, University of Iowa; Dr. Wernher Von Braun,
army expert who designed the Jupiter-C.  1958."

"CAPE CANAVERAL, FLA. - LIFT-OFF!  -  Mercury-Atlas 9 leaves Pad 14 at Cape Canaveral
with Astronaut L. Gordon Cooper aboard for the nation's longest manned orbital flight to date. 
Lift-off occurred at 8:04 a.m. EST, two-and-a-half hours after Cooper was inserted
into the spacecraft "Faith 7."  The second half of the two-day split countdown was picked up
at midnight and proceeded almost perfectly, following Tuesday's one-day disappointment."
